Rio II: Concentrated state of the art

 

Performance details

Application(s). Time-coherent 2-way speakers sound best on stands.

Room size. Small to medium, 100-500sf (10-50 sq. m).

Power. 7 Watts minimum, 120W peak
-amplifier's 8-Ohm rating.

Response. In-room, typically +/- 2dB from 50Hz to 20kHz; -3dB frequencies are below 47Hz and above 24kHz.

Distortion. <0.5% harmonic 100Hz-24kHz, <1% intermodulation, both at 98dB at 1m (I.M.D. is for any two frequencies separated by a 10:1 ratio).

Phase shift. +/- two degrees from 200Hz to 8.5kHz, acoustically. Does not vary with loudness.

Rise time. <10 microseconds, positive or negative input. Does not vary with loudness.

Polarity. Positive, over full bandwidth.

Dispersion. Omni at 47Hz, smoothly decreasing to cardioid at 12kHz.

Impedance. 4.1 to 8.3 Ohms 100Hz to 20kHz. Treat as a 4 Ohm speaker. Impedance does not vary with loudness. (See Impedance Chart in the Rio Gallery.)

Sensitivity. 90dB for 2.83V at 1m, at sea level. Dynamically linear within 0.5dB to 98dB.

Max SPL. 102dB peak at 3m from stereo pair, first-arrival (without room gain).

Pair matching. Amplitude +/- 0.25dB; impedance +/- 0.15 Ohms, 160Hz-8kHz; crossover parts +/- .15%.

 

 

Physical details

Cabinet finish. Clad in black Texture-Kote™ for the look and feel of pin-grained leather.

Enclosure material. Proprietary Q-Stone™ cast marble.

Speaker Conditioning. Upon request, we will gladly condition the speakers' drivers before shipment at no additional charge.

Grilles. Speakers have been designed for foam grilles to be left in place.

Size. 15.5"H; 8.2"W; 13.75"D with grille. For speaker stands, base: 6"W; 12.3"D.

Technical specifications

Woofer construction. 6" (17cm) driver; single-pressed paper/carbon fiber cone with ultra-linear suspension, vented under-hung 2-layer, 1" (25mm) voice coil wound on Kapton former. Mechanically damped chassis, epoxy reinforced. Self shielding, radially-magnetized neodymium-iron-boron magnet structure with heat dissipating black coating; 0.32" (8mm) p-p linear excursion; 9.85g moving mass.

Rio-tweeter

Woofer cabinet. Woofer mounted in Q-Stone™ cabinet. 4th-order Butterworth ported with nearly zero box loss.

Woofer / Bass port. Large, 2" (50mm) diameter aerodynamic port tuned to 54Hz on front. The intake opening is positioned to most efficiently transmit bass pressures from inside the enclosure.

Tweeter construction (left). 1.14" (29mm) impregnated fabric dome with treated high-compliance, wide-roll fabric suspension. Ferrofluid-cooled aluminum voice coil with highly-flexible, silver-strand lead-in wires. Only 0.35g moving mass. Surrounded with wool felt to prevent reflections and diffraction, and to control dispersion directly to the sides, and up and down.

Wiring. Woofer: 14-gauge, heavily silver-plated and polished oxygen-free copper strands, Teflon insulated. Made by Audio Magic. Tweeter: 22-gauge fine-stranded pure oxygen-free copper, cryogenically treated, polyethylene insulated. Made by Jena Labs.

Crossover. Balanced-Phase™ first-order circuit.

Zobel circuit's capacitor.
Woofer: Premium quality. Tweeter: Premium quality.

Crossover principal capacitor.
Woofer: N/A. Tweeter: Super Premium quality.

Crossover bypass capacitor.

Binding posts. Made by Vampire Wire of pure brass, directly plated with silver then gold.
